조태열 외교 "지자체와 협력 체계 구축할 것"

(서울=뉴스1) 정윤영 기자 = 내년에 한국에서 열리는 아시아태평양경제협력체(APEC) 정상회의 개최도시가 경상북도 경주시로 확정됐다.

외교부에 따르면 APEC 정상회의 준비위원회는 27일 오전 제2차 회의를 열고 2025년 APEC 정상회의 개최도시를 확정했다.

앞서 개최도시선정위원회는 지난 20일 경상북도 경주시를 2025 APEC 정상회의 개최도시로 건의하기로 의결한 바 있다.

당시 외교부는 경주시를 건의한 배경에 대해 "문화·관광자원 등 다양한 방면에서 우수성을 보유해 2025 APEC 정상회의 개최를 위한 최적의 후보도시라고 다수결로 결정했다"라고 설명했다.

이날 APEC 준비위원회는 경주와 함께 후보 도시였던 인천광역시와 제주특별자치도가 내년 APEC 정상회의 유치를 위해 들인 노력들을 활용할 수 있도록 분야별 장관회의 및 고위관리회의(SOM) 등 회의를 분산 개최하는 방안도 의결했다.

이에 따라 APEC 정상회의 준비기획단은 조만간 관련 지자체들과 회의 분산 개최 관련 구체적인 방안에 대한 협의를 시작할 예정이다.

조태열 외교부 장관은 "이번 준비위원회 의결을 통해 내년 APEC 정상회의 개최도시가 확정된 만큼,2022-2023 UEFA 챔피언스리그 조별리그2025 APEC 정상회의 개최 지자체와의 협력 체계 구축 등을 포함한 정상회의 준비 업무를 체계적으로 해 나갈 것"이라고 전했다.
