도쿄전력은 이날 오전 8시33분께 후쿠시마 제1원전 6호기에서 전력 공급이 끊겨 사용후핵연료 냉각용 물을 보내는 데 쓰이는 펌프가 멈췄다고 발표했다.

이날 오전 8시35분께는 화재경보기가 작동했다.당시 작업자가 연기가 피어오르는 것을 목격한 뒤 소방대가 출동했지만 화재는 확인되지 않았다.

도쿄전력은 설비가 멈춘 뒤 약 10시간 만인 오후 6시20분께 냉각수를 보내는 펌프 운전을 재개했다고 밝혔다.

도쿄전력은 연료가 충분히 냉각된 상태였기에 이번 사고가 즉각적인 영향을 미치진 않을 것으로 봤다.사고 원인을 조사 중이다.
