로이터통신 등 외신에 따르면 태국 상원은 이날 동성 간 결혼 허용을 골자로 한 '결혼평등법'을 압도적인 찬성으로 승인했다.

앞서 하원은 지난 3월 이 법안을 가결하고 상원으로 넘겼다.

내각과 왕실 승인 절차가 남았지만,이는 형식적인 과정에 가깝다.법안은 왕실 관보에 게재된 후 120일 후 발효된다.

동남아시아에서 동성 결혼 합법화는 태국이 처음이다.

아시아에서는 대만,네팔에 이어 세 번째이며,전 세계적으로는 약 40개국이 동성 결혼을 허용한다.

새 법안은 기존 '남녀','남편과 아내'를 '두 개인','배우자' 등 성 중립적 용어로 바꿔 18세 이상이 되면 성별과 관계 없이 혼인신고를 할 수 있게 했다.
