국제보건기구 WHO가 보건비상사태를 선포했습니다.1년 여 전 아프리카를 중심으로 전세계로 퍼진 엠폭스가 재확산 움직임을 보이고 있기 때문인데요.엠폭스는 수포성 발진 증상으로 시작해 급성 발열,두통을 동반하다 심하면 사망에 이르게 합니다.

로스앤젤레스에서 홍지은 특파원입니다.

엠폭스는 동물과 사람,사람에서 사람으로 전염됩니다.

주로 직접 접촉으로 감염 확산되는데 처음에는 천연두와 비슷한 증상 등 경미하게 시작해 사망에도 이르는 전염병입니다.

현지시간 14일 세계보건기구,플렉스 홀덤WHO는 엠폭스에 대해 국제적 공중보건 비상사태를 선언했습니다.

전문가들로 구성된 국제 긴급위원회는 최근 아프리카 중심의 엠폭스 확산세가 심상치 않다고 판단했습니다.

질병통제예방센터에 따르면 아프리카 대륙의 16개 국가에서 올해만 엠폭스 의심 사례 1만7천 여 건,플렉스 홀덤사망자는 500명을 넘었습니다.

지난해 같은 기간 대비 160% 증가한 수치입니다.

중서부 아프리카 풍토병이었던 엠폭스는 2022년 5월 세계 각국으로 확산했습니다.

같은 해 7월 미주와 유럽 등으로 번지자 WHO는 국제 보건비상사태를 선언했습니다.

그런데 이번에는 새로운 변종이 출현하면서 전보다 전파력과 치명률이 더 높은 것으로 전해집니다.

국제 사회도 확산 방지에 나섰습니다.

우리나라에선 올해 10명이 엠폭스에 감염됐는데 질병청은 지난 5월 엠폭스 감염병 위기 경보를 해제한 바 있습니다.
