유럽연합(EU) 경쟁 당국이 삼성전자와 구글의 생성형 인공지능(AI) 협업과 관련해 조사 착수 가능성을 시사했다.삼성전자의 플래그십 스마트폰 '갤럭시 S24' 시리즈 등에는 구글의 온디바이스용 생성형 인공지능(AI) 모델 '제미나이 나노'가 탑재된다.

29일(현지시간) AP통신 등에 따르면 마르그레테 베스타게르 EU 경쟁 담당 수석 부집행위원장은 "특정 삼성 기기에 '제미나이 나노'를 선탑재한다는 구글과 삼성전자 간 합의의 영향을 더 잘 파악하는 데 필요한 정보를 요청했다"고 밝혔다.

삼성전자는 구글과 올해 초 파트너십을 맺고 S24 시리즈에 '제미나이 나노'와 '제미나이 프로'를 기본 탑재해왔다.

베스타게르 수석부집행위원장의 이날 발언은 거대 정보기술(IT) 기업들이 상대적으로 작은 AI 관련 기업의 소비자 접근 통로를 막는 것이 아니냐는 우려에서 비롯된 것이라고 AP는 해석했다.

베스타게르 수석부집행위원장은 이에 더해 마이크로소프트(MS)와 챗GPT 개발사인 오픈AI 사이의 파트너십 관련해서도 추가적인 조사가 진행될 것이라고 예고했다.2019년부터 오픈AI와 협력 관계를 유지해온 MS는 130억달러(약 18조원)를 투자해 오픈 AI 지분 49%를 보유한 것으로 알려져 있다.

베스타게르 수석부집행위원장은 작년부터 MS와 오픈AI의 파트너십에 대한 조사를 진행해왔으나 EU 기업 인수법 적용 대상은 아니라는 결론이 났다고 말했다.

다만 그는 "이런 파트너십이 한쪽이 다른 일방에 지배적 영향력을 갖는 데 대한 위장인지 여부를 확실히 할 필요가 있다"면서 MS의 경쟁사들에게 MS와 오픈AI의 파트너십이 경쟁을 저해하는지를 묻는 질의서를 발송했다고 밝혔다.
