24일 국립대전현충원에 따르면 이날 오후 변 전 하사의 안장식이 국립대전현충원 충혼당에서 거행됐다.

변 전 하사의 유족들과 군인권센터,맨시티대 인테르변희수재단준비위원회 등 관계자들이 고인의 넋을 기렸다.

이들은 이날 오전 충북 청주에서 변 전 하사의 영현을 인수,맨시티대 인테르충남 계룡대 육군본부 앞에서 노제를 지내고 대전현충원으로 이동해 안장식을 엄수했다.

변 전 하사는 2019년 성전환 수술을 받고 이듬해 육군에게 강제 전역 처분을 받았다.

육군은 변 전 하사의 성전환 수술을 '심신장애'로 규정했다.

변 전 하사는 육군을 상대로 강제 전역 취소 행정소송을 제기했지만,맨시티대 인테르첫 변론을 앞둔 2021년 3월 3일 집에서 숨진 채 발견됐다.

육군 보통전공사상심사위원회는 변 전 하사를 일반 사망으로 분류했지만,맨시티대 인테르국가인권위원회의 재심 권고로 지난 3월 순직 처리했다.

군인권센터 관계자는 "자긍심 높은 군인으로 살아가고자 했던 변희수 하사의 꿈과 명예는 차별과 혐오로 점철된 강제 전역 조치로 짓밟혔다"며 "뒤늦게나마 정부가 순직과 현충원 안장을 승인한 것을 감사하게 생각한다"고 했다.
