인공지능(AI) 열풍의 대표 수혜주인 TSMC 주식이 대만 본토보다 미국에서 더 인기를 끌면서 차익거래 투자자들이 고통스러워지기 시작한 것으로 나타났습니다.

블룸버그 통신은 현지시간 17일 이번 분기 TSMC의 미국주식예탁증서(ADR)와 대만 증시 상장 원주 간의 가격 차이가 2009년 이후 가장 커졌다고 자체 데이터를 인용해 보도했습니다.

블룸버그의 분석 결과,슈투트가르트 대 아인트라흐트TSMC 원주 대비 ADR 가격이 얼마나 비싼지를 뜻하는 프리미엄은 이번 분기에 평균 17%를 나타냈습니다.

TSMC의 ADR은 14일 기준으론 대만 원주 대비 약 21% 비싸게 거래됐습니다.대만 증시가 휴장이던 2월 설 연휴 때는 ADR 프리미엄이 30%까지 치솟았습니다.

TSMC의 ADR 프리미엄 5년 평균은 8% 미만입니다.

ADR 프리미엄이 커지면 원주와 ADR 간의 차액을 노리는 차익거래 투자자들은 손실이 날 가능성이 커집니다.

차익거래란 같거나 비슷한 자산이 다른 시장에서 가격이 다를 때 그 차액을 이용해서 수익을 내는 거래로,슈투트가르트 대 아인트라흐트TSMC 차익거래 투자자들은 대만 원주를 매수하고 ADR을 공매도하는 거래를 합니다.

픽테트 자산운용 관계자는 "장기적으로 정당한 가치로 돌아오기를 바라고 있지만 ADR 프리미엄이 더 올라갈 수 있고 그러면 많은 고통이 뒤따를 것"이라고 말했습니다.

TSMC의 ADR 가격은 올해 들어 14일까지 66% 뛰었는데 대만에서 원주 주가는 55% 올랐습니다.

ADR은 외국인 투자자가 더 쉽게 접근할 수 있어서 주가 상승 폭이 더 컸다고 블룸버그는 분석했습니다.
