(서울=연합뉴스) 서혜림 기자 = 2025학년도부터 의대 모집 정원이 대폭 늘어나는 가운데 최상위권 학생들이 진학하는 영재학교 경쟁률은 전년보다 소폭 상승했다.

이공계 인재 육성에 특화된 영재학교에선 학생이 의대에 진학할 경우 상당한 불이익이 발생하는데,의대 증원에도 최상위권 이공계 희망 학생들이 진로를 유지한 것으로 읽힌다.

13일 종로학원에 따르면 최근 원서 접수를 마감한 2025학년도 전국 8개 영재학교 중 경쟁률을 공개한 7개 학교의 평균 경쟁률은 5.96대 1로 전년(5.86대 1)에 비해 소폭 상승했다.

영재학교 중 세종과학예술영재학교의 경쟁률이 7.52대 1로 가장 높았으며 인천과학예술영재학교(7.37대 1),프로야구 나무위키대구과학고(6.56대 1),서울과학고(6.18대 1),프로야구 나무위키광주과학고(5.58대 1),경기과학고(4.99대 1),대전과학고(4.09대 1) 순으로 나타났다.

한국과학영재학교는 경쟁률을 공개하지 않았다.

영재학교란 재능이 뛰어난 학생을 조기에 발굴해 소질에 맞는 교육을 실시하면서 국가와 사회 발전에 기여하게 지원하는 학교를 말한다.과학과 수학 등 이공계열 부분에 특화된 학생들이 지원하게 된다.

영재학교 학생이 의대를 지원할 경우 내신에 불이익이 있고 교육비와 장학금을 반납해야 하며,프로야구 나무위키학교생활기록부에도 학교 밖 교육·연구 활동을 기재할 수 없다.

종로학원은 "영재학교 지원자들은 사실상 초등학교 때부터 진학을 준비했던 학생들로 의대 모집정원이 확대되었다 하더라도 갑작스럽게 일반고 등으로 진학 경로를 바꾸기에는 어려웠던 것 같다"고 분석했다.

아울러 영재학교 입학 후에도 의대 진학을 위해 학교를 그만두거나 졸업 후 의대를 다시 도전하는 등의 가능성도 충분히 보인다고도 설명했다.
