기시다 총리는 지난해 8월 15일에도 야스쿠니 신사에 '자민당 총재 기시다 후미오' 명의로 공물 대금을 봉납했다.

현직 각료인 기하라 미노루 방위상,츠바메가에시 마작신도 요시타카 경제재생담당상 등은 직접 야스쿠니신사를 찾아 참배했다.현직 각료의 야스쿠니신사 참배는 2020년 이후 5년 연속 이어지고 있다.

아울러 자민당내 젊은 정치인으로 꼽히는 고이즈미 신지로 전 환경상과 고바야시 다카유키 전 경제안보담당상도 참배 대열에 합류했다.이들은 차기 자민당 총재 선거에 출마할 가능성이 거론되는 정치인으로 꼽힌다.

야스쿠니신사는 메이지 유신 전후 일본에서 벌어진 내전과 일제가 일으킨 수많은 전쟁에서 숨진 246만6천여 명의 영령을 추모하고 있다.극동 국제군사재판(도쿄재판)에 따라 처형된 도조 히데키 전 총리 등 태평양전쟁 A급 전범 14명도 합사돼 있다.

또 한반도 출신자도 2만여 명 합사돼 있다.

한편 전날 기시다 총리가 다음 달 하순 치러지는 집권 자민당 총재 선거 불출마를 선언하며 총리 연임 포기 의사를 밝혔다.
