공화당이 주도하는 미국 하원이 12일(현지시간) 메릭 갈런드 법무장관에 대해 의회 모독 혐의로 고발하도록 요청하는 결의를 채택했습니다.

이로써 오는 11월 대선을 앞두고 공화당과 법무부의 긴장이 한층 가열될 전망입니다.

하원은 이날 본회의에서 갈런드 장관에 대해 의회 모독 혐의로 고발하도록 사법 당국에 요청하는 결의안에 대한 투표를 진행해 찬성 216표 대 반대 207표로 가결 처리했습니다.

공화당 의원 가운데는 검사 출신인 데이비드 조이스 의원을 제외한 전원이 찬성표를 던졌습니다.

조이스 의원은 성명을 통해 "전직 검사로서 사법 시스템의 양극화를 심화하는 결의안에 양심상 찬성할 수 없다"고 밝혔습니다.

2022년 11월 중간선거에서 공화당이 하원을 차지한 이후 의회 모독 결의안이 가결된 것은 이번이 처음입니다.

법무장관에 대한 검찰의 고발을 요청하는 이번 의회 모독 결의는 사실상 상징적 성격이 크다고 워싱턴포스트(WP) 등 미국 언론은 평가했습니다.

도널드 트럼프 전 대통령과 공화당은 조 바이든 대통령 취임 이후 법무부를 비롯한 사법당국의 정치화가 극에 달했다며 공세를 퍼붓고 있습니다.

이들은 트럼프 전 대통령에 대한 4건의 형사 기소가 모두 정적을 제거하기 위한 "부패한 결정"이라고 몰아가며 사법당국 전반에 대한 대대적인 손보기를 공공연히 언급하고 있습니다.

이번 의회 모독 결의는 갈런드 장관이 바이든 대통령의 특검 진술 영상 제출 거부와 관련해 내려졌습니다.

공화당은 바이든 대통령 인지 능력 논란에 결정적인 불을 붙인 로버트 허 전 특검의 조사 영상과 오디오 제출을 요청했지만,강남 포커백악관과 법무부는 향후 법 집행에 미칠 부정적 영향을 이유로 이에 대해 거부했습니다.

갈런드 장관은 지난 4일 하원 법사위에 출석해 공화당의 전방위 압박과 관련,강남 포커"나는 겁먹지 않을 것"이라며 "우리는 민주주의 수호에 있어 물러서지 않을 것"이라고 반발한 바 있습니다.
