태평양에 안전하게 추락시킬 장치 개발

일론 머스크가 이끄는 미국의 우주기업 스페이스X가 국제우주정거장(ISS) 철거업체로 선정됐다.스페이스X는 앞으로 10년 이내에 ISS를 태평양으로 떨어뜨리기 위한 장치를 개발할 예정이다.

미 항공우주국(NASA·나사)은 26일(현지 시각) 블로그를 통해 “ISS의 안전한 철거를 위한 궤도 이탈 장치(Deorbit Vehicle) 개발 기업을 스페이스X로 선정했다”고 밝혔다.

이번 계약으로 스페이스X는 나사로부터 최대 8억4300만달러(약 1조1629억원)를 지원 받는다.켄 보어삭스 나사 우주운영임무국 부국장은 “이번 계약은 ISS가 운영이 끝날 때 안전하고 책임감 있는 폐기 절차를 보장하는 데 큰 도움이 될 것”이라고 말했다.

ISS는 2030년 운영 수명이 끝나면서 폐기가 예정돼 있다.나사는 수명 종료 이후 ISS를 태평양‘포인트 니모’에 추락시켜 폐기할 예정이다.포인트 니모는 남태평양 가운데 망망대해에 있어 폐기된 우주 물체의 추락 장소로 사용된다.이 때문에‘우주선의 묘지’라는 이름이 붙어 있다.스페이스X는 ISS가 안전하게 포인트 니모에 추락할 수 있도록 장치를 개발한다.

ISS는 미국과 러시아를 비롯해 23국이 참여해 건설한 우주 실험시설이다.1998년 ISS를 이룰 첫 모듈을 발사한 것을 시작으로 2000년 본격적인 유인 운영이 시작됐다.ISS는 중국이 독자 우주정거장 톈궁을 짓기 전까지 인류의 유일한 우주 거점 역할을 했다.우주 환경에서 인간의 건강 변화,룩삼 라이브 월드컵미세 중력 상태에서의 물질 반응 같은 다양한 연구가 이 곳에서 이뤄졌다.현재까지 3300건 이상의 실험이 ISS에서 이뤄졌다.
