아프리카를 중심으로 확산 중인 엠폭스,원숭이두창에 대해 세계보건기구(WHO)가 최고 수준의 보건 경계 태세인 공중보건비상사태(PHEIC)를 선언했습니다.

테워드로스 아드하놈 거브러여수스 WHO 사무총장은 현지시간 14일 전문가들로 구성된 국제 보건규약 긴급위원회의 논의 결과를 받아들여 엠폭스에 대한 PHEIC을 선언한다고 밝혔습니다.

긴급위원회는 아프리카를 중심으로 엠폭스의 확산이 빠른 데다 발병국의 의료 역량이 상대적으로 취약한 점 등을 종합적으로 고려해 가장 강도 높은 질병 대응이 필요하다는 데 의견을 모은 것으로 전해졌습니다.

거버러여수스 사무총장은 이날 회의 결과 브리핑을 통해 "엠폭스 확산은 모두가 우려해야 할 문제"라며 "아프리카를 넘어 전 세계로 확산할 가능성이 매우 걱정된다"고 말했습니다.

중서부 아프리카의 풍토병이었던 엠폭스는 2022년 5월부터 세계 각국으로 확산했습니다.

이 병에 걸리면 수포성 발진 증상을 보이는 경우가 많고 급성 발열이나 두통,지뉴근육통 등을 동반하기도 합니다.

유럽과 미주 등지로 엠폭스가 번지자 WHO는 2022년 7월 PHEIC을 선언했고 같은 해 하반기부터 확산이 둔화하면서 지난해 5월 해제를 발표한 바 있습니다.

하지만 또 다른 하위 계통의 엠폭스가 지난해 9월부터 아프리카에서 확산 조짐을 보여왔습니다.

현재 가장 확산이 빠른 곳은 콩고민주공화국으로,지뉴올해에만 확진 사례 1만 4천479건,사망 455명 등이 나왔습니다.

아프리카 질병통제예방센터는 아프리카 대륙 55개국 가운데 최소 16개국에서 엠폭스가 발병했다고 밝혔습니다.
