올해 초 운행 중 창문과 벽체가 뜯겨 나가는 사고가 발생하는 등 잇달아 항공기 안전 문제가 불거진 보잉사가 과거 당국의 눈을 피해 문제가 있는 부품을 숨겼다는 내부 고발자 증언이 확인됐다.

18일(현지시간) CNN은 상원 국토안보·정무위원회 조사소위원회의 보고서에 따르면 보잉 품질보증부서 출신 내부 고발자 샘 모호크는 회사가 사양에서 벗어나거나 파손된 737맥스 부품을 눈에 띄지 않게 옮기고 관련 기록을 위조했다고 말했다.

모호크는 보잉이 지난해 6월 규제 당국인 연방항공청(FAA)의 검사가 임박한 상황에서 이런 은폐 조치를 했다고 주장했다.그는 숨겨진 부적합 부품이 항공기에 장착될 수 있다고 우려를 했는데,로또 인터넷 당첨 수령이 부품들이 일부 항공기에 설치됐을 수 있다고 추측했다.또 이러한 우려 제기에 회사 측이 보복했다고 주장했다.

또 보고서는 보잉이 2021년 자격을 갖추지 못한 제조 근로자에게 자체 작업 검사를 맡기는 등 규정 위반으로 FAA에 적발당했다고도 밝혔다.보잉은 지난해 해당 문제를 시정했다고 밝혔다.

이날 보고서와 함께 청문회가 열렸다.청문회에 참석한 데이브 캘훈 보잉 최고경영자(CEO) 겸 회장은 "과거와 현재 전 세계에 있는 모든 보잉 직원을 대신해 손실에 대해 사과하고 싶다"고 말했다.

보잉 측은 모호크의 주장에 대해 보고서에 포함된 새로운 주장을 검토하고 있다고 밝혔다.
