28일 연합뉴스는 NYPD와 뉴욕 한국총영사관을 인용해 NYPD의 허정윤 총경(Inspector)이 데퓨티 치프(Deputy Chief)로의 승진이 내정됐다고 보도했다.허 총경은 28일(현지시간) 진급식에서 새 보직을 통보받을 예정이다.데퓨티 치프는 일선 경찰서를 책임지는 총경보다 한 등급 높은 직급이다.직급 체계가 다른 한국과 단순 비교는 어렵지만,스타니시치 프로필한국의 경무관과 유사한 고위 간부직이다.계급장도 총경을 상징하는 '독수리'에서 군의 장성급과 같은 별 1개로 바뀐다.

허 총경은 1998년 NYPD의 한인 첫 여성 경관으로 임용됐다.NYPD는 3만6000명의 경찰관과 1만9000명의 민간 직원이 근무하는 미국 최대 규모의 경찰 조직이다.이후 맨해튼과 퀸스 등 한인 거주 지역에서 근무하면서 경력을 쌓은 그는 지난 2022년 한인 최초로 경정으로 승진한 데 이어 2023년 연말 한인 최초로 총경으로 승진하는 등 NYPD에서 '한인 최초' 기록을 쏟아냈다.이번 승진은 총경 승진 결정 뒤 약 6개월 만이다.

허 총경은 "한인 최초로 별 계급장을 달게 된다고 생각하니 감회가 새롭고 한인으로서 '뭔가 해냈구나'라는 실감이 든다"며 "NYPD 내에 한인들의 존재감을 알릴 수 있게 돼 기쁘다"라는 소감을 전했다.
