티베트의 정신적 지도자 달라이 라마가 7년 만에 미국을 방문했습니다.

티베트 망명정부를 이끄는 88살의 달라이 라마가 현지시각 23일 미국 뉴욕에 도착했습니다.

수천 명의 지지자들이 7년 만에 미국을 방문한 달라이 라마를 환영했습니다.

[텐진 쿤퀴/달라이 라마 지지자 : "성하(달라이 라마)를 만나 축복을 얻고 티베트 연대도 강화하려고 왔습니다."]

이번 방문의 공식적인 이유는 무릎 치료 때문입니다.

하지만 최근 미 의회에서 티베트-중국 분쟁법이 통과된 만큼 정치적 행보라는 해석이 나옵니다.

이 법안은 티베트가 예전부터 중국 영토였다는 중국 측의 주장을 부정하는 내용을 담고 있습니다.

미 의회 대표단은 지난주 인도에 있는 티베트 망명정부를 방문해 법안에 대해 논의하기도 했습니다.

[낸시 펠로시/전 미국 하원의장/19일 : "이 법안은 (중국에) 메시지를 보냅니다.조만간 바이든 대통령이 서명할 겁니다."]

이에 따라 달라이 라마가 이번 방문 기간 대선을 앞둔 바이든 대통령을 만나 법안 서명을 촉구할 경우 중국의 강한 반발이 예상됩니다.

[린젠/중국 외교부 대변인/20일 : "티베트 문제에 대한 중국 정부의 입장은 일관되고 명확합니다.티베트 문제는 중국의 내정이며,드래곤 슬롯 무료 플레이외부 세력의 간섭을 허용하지 않습니다."]

최근 타이완 문제와 중국산 전기차 관세 부과 등으로 미중 갈등이 심화하는 상황에서 티베트 소수민족 문제가 새로운 뇌관이 될 수 있다는 분석도 나옵니다.
