24일 경기소방재난본부 등에 따르면 이날 오전 10시 31분쯤 화성시 서신면 전곡리 소재 업체 아리셀의 공장(리튬전지 제조)에서 불이 났다.

신고를 접수한 소방당국은 다수의 인명피해와 연소 확대를 우려해 신고접수 9분 만인 오전 10시 40분 대응 1단계를 발령한 데 이어 오전 10시 54분 대응 2단계를 발령했다.

대응 2단계는 인접한 소방서 5~9곳에서 인력과 장비를 동원하는 경보령이다.현장에는 펌프차 등 장비 63대와 인력 159명을 투입해 진화 중이다.

이 불로 현재까지 1명이 사망하고,아약스 대 헤이렌베인1명이 크게 다친 것으로 파악됐으며,아약스 대 헤이렌베인5명도 가벼운 부상을 입었다.

다만 여전히 연락이 닿지 않는 등 실종인원이 21명에 달해 추후 사망자가 더 늘어날 수도 있을 것이란 게 소방당국 설명이다.실종인원 대다수는 2층에서 근무하고 있었던 것으로 파악됐다.

최초 발화는 해당 공장 2층 리튬전지 완제품 보관장소에서 폭발과 함께 발생한 것으로 추정되고 있다.

리튬 배터리 화재는 불이 나면 진화가 어려워 소방당국도 화재 진압에 어려움을 겪고 있다.

이 공장은 3층짜리(연 면적 2300㎡) 철근콘크리트 구조물 11개동이다.아리셀은 코스닥 상장사인 에스코넥의 자회사이다.상시 근로자 수는 50여명이다.
