LG화학이 4년 전 발생한 인도 생산법인 LG폴리머스 사고의 피해 주민을 위한 지원을 확대하기로 했다.

LG화학에 따르면 신학철 부회장과 차동석 최고재무책임자(CFO) 사장,퍽치기 야구노국래 석유화학사업본부장 등 최고 경영진은 지난 9일(현지시간) 인도 남부 안드라프라데시주를 찾아 사고 주변 마을 주민과 찬드라바부 나이두 주총리를 만났다.

신 부회장은 이 자리에서 LG폴리머스 사고 피해자에 위로의 뜻을 전하며 사고 인근 마을 5000여가구를 대상으로 지원을 확대하겠다고 밝혔다.이번에 지원될 금액은 약 12억루피(200억원) 규모다.신 부회장은 종합 보상의 기반이 되는 현지 재판이 지연되면서 최근 이상 기후와 경제난 등으로 마을 주민의 어려움을 겪고 있다는 소식을 듣고 내부 논의 끝에 신속한 지원을 결정했다.신 부회장은 “재판 결과가 나오기 전이라도 현지 주민에게 실질적인 도움이 될 수 있는 인도적인 지원에 최선을 다할 것”이라고 말했다.김은희 기자
