'봉선화 연정' 등으로 1980∼90년대 큰 인기를 누린 트로트 가수 현철이 15일 오후 지병으로 별세했다.향년 82세.

과거 매니저를 지낸 작곡가 정원수는 16일 연합뉴스에 "현철이 지병으로 세상을 떠났다.장례 절차가 정해지지 않아 임시로 안치된 것으로 알고 있다"고 전했다.

고인은 1969년 '무정한 그대'로 데뷔했으나 당시 인기를 끌던 나훈아·남진과 달리 이름을 알리지 못하고 오랜 세월 무명가수 생활을 해야 했다.

그뒤 1980년대 들어서 '앉으나 서나 당신 생각',강원도 연고지 야구'사랑은 나비인가봐' 등의 히트곡을 내며 인기 가수로 도약했다.

1988년 발표한 '봉선화 연정'은 "손대면 톡하고 터질 것만 같은 그대/봉선화라 부르리/더 이상 참지 못할 그리움을/가슴 깊이 물들이고"라는 가사로 선풍적인 인기를 끌었다.

고인은 '봉선화 연정'으로 1989년 KBS '가요대상'의 대상을 품에 안은 데 이어 이듬해인 1990년에도 '싫다 싫어'의 히트로 2년 연속 대상을 수상하며 전성기를 구가했다.

하지만 2018년 KBS '가요무대'에 출연해 '봉선화 연정'을 부르는 도중 힘들어하는 모습을 보여 팬들의 걱정을 사기도 했다.

고인은 수년 전 경추 디스크 수술을 받은 뒤 건강이 악화해 투병생활을 이어왔다고 연합뉴스는 전했다.슬하에 1남1녀가 있다.
