운전 중 게임 관련 유튜브 영상 튼 채 과속 운행으로 횡단보도를 건너던 노인과 며느리를 치어 숨지게 한 20대 공무원이 법정 구속됐다.

12일 법조계에 따르면 춘천지법 원주지원 형사3단독 황해철 판사는 교통사고처리 특례법 위반(치사) 혐의로 재판에 넘겨진 20대 A씨에게 금고 10개월을 선고하고 법정구속했다.

앞서 A씨는 지난해 11월 15일 오후 6시 12분쯤 횡성군 한 교차로에서 시속 60km 구간을 시속 87.5km 이상의 과속으로 달려 횡단보도를 건너던 B(86)씨와 그의 며느리 C(59)씨를 들이받았다.

A씨의 과속 운전으로 B씨는 그 자리에서 숨졌고 크게 다친 C씨는 병원으로 옮겨져 치료를 받던 중 사망했다.사고 당시 A씨는 음주 상태는 아니었던 것으로 전해졌다.

재판부에 제출된 블랙박스에서 A씨는 사고 발생 6초 전부터 횡단보도를 천천히 지나던 피해자들을 충분히 발견할 수 있었음에도 전방 주시를 게을리 한 탓에 속도를 거의 줄이지 않은 채 과속 주행했다.

당시 A씨는 게임 관련 유튜브 영상을 튼 채 운전한 것으로 드러났으나 A씨는 재판 과정에서 소리만 청취했을 뿐이라고 주장했다.

재판부는 "영상을 시청했는지는 분명치 않지만 적어도 피고인이 과속하면서 전방 주시를 게을리한 것에는 유튜브 영상 재생이 하나의 원인이 됐음은 분명해 보인다"고 했다.

그러면서 "피해자들의 유족과 합의해 (유족이) 처벌을 원하지 않는 점을 참작하더라도 이 사고 발생에 있어서 피고인의 과실이 너무 중하다"며 "두 명의 생명을 앗아간 잘못에 대해서는 엄한 처벌이 불가피하다"고 양형 이유를 밝혔다.

A씨는 양형 부당을 이유로 항소했으며,슬롯 바닥작업이 일로 직위 해제된 공무원인 A씨는 징계 절차도 함께 진행 중인 것으로 전해졌다.
