경찰에 따르면 A씨는 전날인 10일 오후 6시 39분쯤 한라산 성판악 탐방안내소 인근 5·16 도로에서 서귀포 방향으로 쏘나타 승용차를 몰다가 중앙선을 침범해 승용차 3대를 잇달아 들이받았다.

사고가 나자 잠시 멈췄던 A씨는 이후 파손된 차를 몰고 달아나다가 또다시 중앙선을 침범해 마주 오던 버스와 충돌했다.

A씨는 경찰에 "사고 기억이 없고 아침에 눈을 떠보니 풀숲에 누워 있었다"고 진술한 것으로 전해졌다.

체포 직후 진행한 음주 측정에서 A씨의 혈중알코올농도는 0%로 나왔다.

경찰은 "혈액 채취를 통한 음주 여부와 마약 등 약물 투약 여부를 조사하고 있다"며 "피의자를 상대로 중앙선 침범 이유 등 자세한 사고 원인을 조사하고 있다"고 전했다.
