연구진은 세계 제2위 경제 대국으로서 인구배당효과를 누려온 중국이 2061년이면 연간 1천900만명이 사망하는 '사망자 피크'에 다다를 것이라며,루이스 카스트루이는 급속한 고령화와 출산율 급감에 따른 인구통계학적 위기에 고민을 더할 것이라고 지적했습니다.

SCMP는 푸단대 연구진의 연구 결과가 이달 중국 소셜미디어 웨이보에서 최고 인기 화제 중 하나로 떠오르며 뜨거운 논의를 불러일으켰다고 전했습니다.

연구진은 1980년대 한 자녀 정책 이전에 태어난 '부머 세대'가 빠르게 늙어가고 2040년부터는 사망자 급증이 더욱 분명해질 것이기에 중국은 이에 따른 도전을 해결하기 위한 조치들을 취해야 한다고 강조했습니다.

중국 인구는 신생아 수가 2022년과 2023년 내리 1천만명을 밑돌면서 2년 연속 감소했습니다. 신생아 수가 1천만 명 이하로 떨어진 것은 1949년 신중국 건국 이후 처음입니다. 반면 중국의 지난해 사망자 수는 1천110만명을 넘어섰습니다.
