국내 산업의 기둥이었던 석유화학 업계가 극심한 불황을 겪고 있습니다.

영업 손실이 지속되면서,기업들이 공장 가동을 중단하는 등 비상경영을 강화하고 있습니다.

계현우 기자가 취재했습니다.

[리포트]

LG화학은 지난 3월 합성수지 원료를 만드는 여수 공장 가동을 중단했습니다.

최근 '비상경영'을 선포한 롯데케미칼은 국내외 출장 인원을 지난해보다 20% 줄이기로 했습니다.

두 기업이 가동 중단에 몸집 줄이기까지 나선 건,스타드 랭스공장을 돌릴수록 손해를 보고 있기 때문입니다.

주력 제품인 에틸렌 판매가에서 원료가를 뺀 수치인 '에틸렌 스프레드',이 수치가 300달러보다 낮으면 손해를 보는 구조인데,2년 전 200달러 밑으로 떨어지더니 좀처럼 회복되지 못하고 있습니다.

글로벌 수요 침체가 계속되고 있고,최근엔 수입국이던 중국이 자체 생산시설을 빠르게 늘렸기 때문입니다.

[석유화학 업계 관계자 : "우리 주요 수출국이던 중국 자급률이 매우 급격하게 올라간 데다,이런 중국의 공급과잉으로 에틸렌 가격까지 떨어지면서 쉽지 않은 상황입니다."]

올 1분기에도 석유화학 업계 영업 손실은 계속되고 있고,스타드 랭스공장 가동률도 80% 수준에 머무르고 있습니다.

이 때문에 고부가가치에서 해법을 찾아야 한다는 목소리가 나오고 있습니다.

하지만 단기간에 가시적인 성과를 거두기 쉽지 않은 만큼 석유화학 업계의 비상경영은 당분간 계속될 것으로 보입니다.
