MOU 체결은 지난 24일(현지시간) 미국 라스베이거스에서 열린 세계 최대 규모의 리튬·배터리 원소재 콘퍼런스인 '패스트마켓 콘퍼런스(Fastmarkets Conference)'를 계기로 이뤄졌다.체결식에는 박종진 SK온 전략구매담당 부사장과 댄 홀튼(Dan Holton) 엑손모빌 저탄소솔루션 사업 부사장 등 양사 관계자가 참석했다.

MOU를 통해 SK온은 엑손모빌이 아칸소(Arkansas)주 리튬염호에서 직접리튬추출(DLE) 기술을 사용해 생산한 리튬을 최대 10만톤 공급받을 수 있다.구체적인 공급 시기와 물량은 본 계약 체결 후 확정된다.DLE기술은 염수에서 흡착 등을 통해 리튬을 직접 추출하는 공법을 말한다.탄소 배출량이 상대적으로 적어 친환경적이다.

미국 최대 석유기업 엑손모빌은 배터리 핵심 소재 사업 진출을 위해 지난해 초 아칸소 염호를 인수,피자빙고 밀양수산점같은 해 11월 리튬 채굴을 개시했다.염호에는 전기차 5000만대 분 배터리를 생산할 수 있는 리튬 400만톤(탄산리튬환산기준)이 매장된 것으로 추정된다.

SK온은 미국산 리튬 공급망 확대로 인플레이션감축법(IRA) 대응력을 강화할 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 있다.박 부사장은 "핵심 시장인 북미 지역 소비자 이익을 보장하기 위해 IRA 요건을 충족하는 핵심광물 확보에 지속적으로 노력하겠다"고 말했다.

댄 암만(Dan Ammann) 엑손모빌 저탄소솔루션 사업 사장은 "탄소 감축을 위해서는 더 많은 리튬이 필요하다"며 "SK온과의 협력은 이러한 노력의 일환이며,피자빙고 밀양수산점에너지 안보 강화 및 제조업 활성화 등에도 기여할 것"이라고 밝혔다.
