지난해 12월 한국계 미국인으로는 뉴욕경찰(NYPD)에서 첫 총경(Inspector)이 됐던 허정윤 총경이 한국의 경무관에 해당하는 계급(Deputy Chief)으로 승진한다.NYPD에 따르면 그는 오는 28일 진급식에서 새 보직을 받을 예정이다.허 총경은 1960년대 경상남도 진해에서 태어나 부산에서 초·중·고등학교를 나온 뒤 부산여대를 졸업했다.

NYPD의 전체 인원은 약 3만6000명으로 이 중 경무관 이상은 약 150~200명에 해당한다.이 중 약 10%가 여성이다.허 총경은 이민자 출신으로 또다시 유리천장을 뚫고 결과를 이뤄낸 것이다.수많은 한국계가 NYPD를 거쳐갔지만 남녀를 통틀어 이 자리까지 오른 것은 허 총경이 처음이다.

현재 그는 한국인이 많이 사는 동네인 퀸스 북부 지역의 8개 경찰서를 총괄하는 본부에서 근무중이다.지난해 12월 본지 인터뷰에서 그는 “정년까지 남은 기간 대한민국 사람이라는 자부심으로 길을 뚫겠다”고 밝힌 바 있다.
