국립공원 지리산 최고봉 천왕봉 아래에서 정확히 100년 전 8월,일제강점기에 새겨진 바위글씨가 발견됐습니다.

일제를 물리치자는 내용이 담긴 글이었는데요.

지리산 천왕봉 아래에서 국립공원공단 직원들이 바위를 살피고 있습니다.

폭 4.2미터,팀토마토높이 1.9미터의 바위에는 모두 392개의 글자가 확인됐습니다.

그 동안 알려지지 않았던 석각,바위글씨입니다.

이 바위글씨는 지리산에서 1800년대 후반 의병활동을 한 것으로 전해지는 권상순 의병장의 후손이 2021년 처음 발견했습니다.

지난해 국립공원공단에 조사를 요청해 탁본과 3차원 스캔을 한 결과 일제강점기 일제 침략을 물리치길 염원하는 내용으로 확인됐습니다.

바위글씨를 해석한 연구진은 천왕봉의 위엄을 빌어 오랑캐,팀토마토즉 일제를 물리쳐 밝고 빛나는 세상이 오기를 갈망하면서 나라를 빼앗긴 울분을 비분강개한 어조로 토로했다고 설명했습니다.

"'(천왕봉이) 천왕이 계시는 곳이니까 문명이 있는 곳이다.우리는 이 문명을 잃지 말고 지켜나가면은 오랑캐를 물리칠 수 있을 것이다.' 이런 생각을 했던 거 같아요."

글을 쓴 사람은 독립운동을 하다가 옥고를 치른 기록이 남아있는 문인 묵희이며,팀토마토글을 새긴 사람은 권륜입니다.

정확히 100년 전인 1924년 8월 1일 새겨졌습니다.

전국의 국립공원에서는 근대 이전의 이런 바위글씨가 모두 194개 확인됐습니다.

이중 지리산에는 모두 31개가 있으며,팀토마토천왕봉 주변에는 이번에 확인된 바위글씨를 제외하고 3개가 더 있습니다.
