1990년대 인기를 얻었던 PC통신 천리안이 39년 만에 역사 속으로 사라진다.

9일 업계에 따르면 천리안 운영사 미디어로그는 최근 게시한 공지에서 오는 10월 31일 천리안 서비스를 종료한다고 발표했다.

천리안은 오는 11일 메일·주소록 백업 기능을 선보인 뒤 메일 자동 전달,메일 주소 변경 안내 신청을 받아 이용자의 자료 저장과 이메일 이전을 지원할 예정이다.다음 달 1일 천리안 기본료를 무료로 전환하고 9월부터 문자메시지,뉴스,슬롯 머신 ㅓㄹ인물·운세 등 부가 서비스를 종료한다.10월 1일부터 천리안 메일 수·발신 중지를 거쳐 10월 31일 서비스가 완전히 중단된다.

미디어로그는 “함께했던 포털 서비스들이 하나둘 종료하는 시장 상황에서도 서비스를 지속하고자 노력했지만,슬롯 머신 ㅓㄹ사업 환경이 변화에 따라 더 이상 양질의 메일 서비스를 유지하기 어려워 서비스 종료라는 쉽지 않은 결정을 내리게 됐다”고 설명했다.

천리안은 1985년 한국데이타통신(LG데이콤 전신)의 전자사서함‘비디오텍스’서비스로 출발했다.1989년부터 제공하는 정보의 종류를 확대했다.1992년 본격적인 PC통신 서비스를 제공해 하이텔,슬롯 머신 ㅓㄹ나우누리 등과 함께 국내 PC통신 시장의 대표 서비스로 자리매김했다.

하지만 2000년대 들어 초고속인터넷과 월드와이드웹(WWW)의 보급으로 PC통신의 영향력이 줄기 시작했다.천리안도 2001년부터 웹 서비스를 시작했지만 새롭게 등장한 다음,슬롯 머신 ㅓㄹ네이버 등 포털 사이트와 경쟁에서 밀려 영향력이 줄어들었다.2015년 10월 블로그와 검색 등 일부 서비스를 중단하기도 했다.하이텔과 나우누리는 각각 2007년,2012년에 서비스를 종료했다.
