(광주=연합뉴스) 손상원 기자 = 걸음이 느린 노인이나 교통약자가 미처 건너지 못했을 때 보행신호가 자동으로 연장되는 스마트 횡단보도 시스템이 광주에서도 가동된다.

1일 광주시에 따르면 광주경찰청과 함께 구축한 '지능형 교통체계(ITS) 스마트 횡단보도'를 한 달간 시범 운영을 거쳐 이날 본격 운영에 들어갔다.

광주시는 국토교통부 공모를 통해 19억원을 투입,노인·어린이 교통사고 위험 지역 23곳에 시스템을 구축했다.

광산구 8개,국민은행 퀴즈북구와 서구 5개씩,국민은행 퀴즈남구 3개,동구 2개가 설치됐다.

신호등 기둥에 부착한 인공지능(AI) 카메라가 보행자를 감지해 길을 건널 시간이 부족하다고 판단하면 신호 시간을 최장 5초간 자동으로 연장해준다.

운전자에게는 전광판으로 보행자를 알리고,보행자에게는 음성으로 현장 위험을 안내한다.
