지난 1979년 개원해 올해로 45주년을 맞이한 주뉴욕한국문화원이‘뉴욕코리아센터’로 새롭게 문을 연다.

문화체육관광부는 LA,상하이,도쿄 등에 이어 세계 6번째로 미국 뉴욕 맨해튼 32번가에‘코리아센터’를 건립해 확장·이전한다고 27일 밝혔다.코리아센터는 한국문화원과 한국관광공사,한국콘텐츠진흥원,제 1082회 로또세종학당 등 한국문화를 알리는 기관이 함께 입주해 현지에서 한국문화의 다양한 요소를 유기적으로 소개할 예정이다.

뉴욕코리아센터는 연면적 3383㎡,지하 2층부터 지상 7층 규모의 건물 전체를 사용한다.공연과 영화 상영을 위한 190석 규모의 극장,제 1082회 로또전시장과 정원,도서실 등을 갖췄다.

28일 열리는 센터 개원식에는 유인촌 문체부 장관을 비롯해 현지 주요 문화예술기관 인사 150여 명이 참석할 계획이다.유 장관은 “센터 부지는 15여 년 전 장관으로서 매입하기로 결정했기에 개인적으로도 각별한 곳”이라며 “세계문화시장에 전파력이 큰 뉴욕에 센터를 설립함으로써 한국이 문화 강국으로 발돋움할 수 있기를 기대한다”고 밝혔다.
