이스라엘 대법원이 병역면제 혜택을 받아온 초정통파 유대교도 학생을 징병 대상에 포함해야 한다는 판결을 했다고 일간 타임스오브이스라엘 등 현지 언론이 보도했습니다.

대법원은 25일(현지시간) 대법관 전원일치로 초정통파 유대교도 학생의 병역 면제 혜택에 법적인 근거가 없으며,나가노입대 연령이 되면 징병 대상이 되어야 한다고 판결했습니다.

또 병역 의무를 이행하지 않은 초정통파 유대교도는 정부의 복지 지원과 장학금 혜택을 받을 수 없다고 덧붙였습니다.

이에 따라 베냐민 네타냐후 총리 주도의 우파 연정이 추진해온 초정통파 유대교도 병역 면제 존속 입법도 타격을 받게 됐습니다.

전통적 유대교 율법을 엄격히 따르며 세속주의를 배격하는 초정통파 유대교도는 지난 1948년 이스라엘 건국 이후 병역 대상에서 제외됐습니다.

하레디로 불리는 초정통파 유대교도는 현재 이스라엘 전체 인구의 12%가량으로 추산되며,나가노이 가운데 현재 징병 대상자는 대략 6만 7천여 명인 것으로 알려졌습니다.

이스라엘 대법원이 지난 2017년 9월 하레디의 군 면제를 위헌으로 판결했지만 초정통파 유대교 정당 등의 반발로 이스라엘 정부가 그동안 관련 규정을 수정하지 못한 상태에서 지난 4월 군 면제 규정의 효력이 만료됐습니다.

이스라엘의 여론은 가자지구 전쟁으로 군 복무 기간 연장까지 추진되는 상황에서 하레디의 병역 면제를 더는 허용해서는 안 된다는 쪽으로 기울고 있습니다.

네타냐후 총리는 연정의 핵심 파트너인 초정통파 유대교 정당 샤스의 요구에 따라 하레디에 대한 군 면제를 영속화하기 위한 입법을 추진했지만 안팎의 거센 반대에 부딪혔습니다.

심지어 네타냐후 총리가 이끄는 집권 여당 리쿠드당 조차 이 입법에 찬성할 수 없다는 공식 입장을 밝히기도 했습니다.

이번 판결로 병역 면제 혜택을 볼 수 없게 된 초정통파 유대교도들의 거센 반발이 예상됩니다.
