네옴은 사우디의 실권자인 무함마드 빈살만 왕세자의 지시에 따라 홍해와 인접한 사막과 산악지대에 서울의 44배 넓이의 친환경 스마트 도시 등을 조성하는 사업입니다.

BBC는 "사우디 정부가 네옴 프로젝트 규모를 축소하는 것은 저유가로 정부 수입이 타격을 받았기 때문"이라고 분석했습니다.

실제 사우디 정부는 2022년 말부터 적자 재정을 이어오고 있으며 올해는 210억 달러 적자가 예상되는 상황입니다.

또 2027년 아시아축구연맹 아시안컵과 2029년 동계 아시안게임,영국 2부리그2030년 세계박람회 등 대형 국제 행사도 잇따라 개최해야 합니다.

이 같은 대규모 프로젝트 비용을 마련하기 위해 사우디는 이달 초 국영 석유회사 아람코 주식 112억 달러 어치를 매각하기도 했습니다.
