7일(현지 시간) 로이터 통신에 따르면 이날 오후 멕시코 게레로주(州) 틱스틀라에서 자택을 나서던 시의원 에스메랄다 가르존은 집 앞으로 찾아온 무장한 남성들의 공격을 받고 사망했다.

해당 시의원은 우파 주요 야당인 제도혁명당(PRI) 소속으로 틱스틀라 시의원에 당선돼 시의회의 형평성·젠더 위원회를 이끌었다.현지 당국은 성명을 통해 사건을 조사하고 용의자들을 찾기 위해 현장에 경찰을 배치했다고 밝혔다.

앞서 지난 3일에는 미초아칸주 코티하의 여성 시장 욜란다 산체스 피게로아가 괴한의 총격을 받고 숨졌다.두 사건 모두 이달 2일 대선에서 좌파 집권당 국가재생운동(MORENA)의 클라우디아 셰인바움 후보가 첫 여성 대통령으로 당선된 후 일어난 일이다.

로이터는 가르존 시의원이 소셜미디어 계정에 "두려움 없이 투표하라"는 글을 올리는 등 이번 선거에서 집권당인 모레나 후보들을 지지했다고 전했다.
