캘리포니아 주정부도 교내 금지 정책 검토

(로스앤젤레스=연합뉴스) 임미나 특파원 = 미국 서부 최대 도시 로스앤젤레스(LA)의 공립 초·중등학교에서 내년부터 휴대전화 사용이 전면 금지된다.

현지 일간지 LA타임스 등에 따르면 LA 교육위원회는 18일(현지시간) LA통합교육구 관할 공립학교에서 학생들의 휴대전화 이용을 전면 금지하는 결의안을 채택했다.

이 결의안은 내년 1월부터 발효돼 교육 현장에서 적용된다.

LA통합교육구는 관할 학교의 학생 수가 약 40만 명으로,야구 콜드게임 점수미국에서 두 번째로 큰 교육구다.

지금은 학생들이 수업 시간에만 휴대전화 이용이 제한되고 점심시간이나 쉬는 시간에는 허용된다.

LA 교육위원회는 휴대전화가 학습을 방해하고 학생들에게 불안감을 유발하며 사이버 괴롭힘을 야기하기도 한다고 지적했다.

결의안을 주도한 닉 멜보인 교육위원은 "학생들은 학교에서 수업 시간에 몰래 휴대전화 화면을 넘기거나 복도를 걸으면서도 휴대전화를 본다"며 "점심시간이나 쉬는 시간에도 에어팟(이어폰)을 끼고 서로 이야기하거나 놀지 않는다"고 말했다.

캘리포니아주(州) 정부도 학교 내 휴대전화 이용 제한 또는 금지 정책을 검토하고 있다.

개빈 뉴섬 캘리포니아 주지사는 성명에서 "소셜미디어는 청소년의 정신 건강에 해를 끼치고 있다"며 "의회와 협력해 학교에서 스마트폰 이용을 제한할 수 있기를 기대한다"고 밝혔다.
