잉글랜드 프로축구 울버햄튼의 공격수 황희찬이 연습 경기 도중 상대 팀 선수로부터 인종차별을 당해 논란이 되고 있다.

16일(한국시간) 울버햄프턴은 구단 홈페이지에 "코모 1907(이탈리아)와 연습경기에서 황희찬이 인종차별적인 발언을 들으면서 승리가 무색해졌다"고 밝혔다.

이어 "항희찬이 인종차별적인 말을 들은 것에 격분한 다니엘 포덴세가 격한 반응을 보여 퇴장당했지만 울버햄프턴은 승리를 따냈다"고 전했다.

앞서 지난 15일 오후 스페인 마르베야에서 전지훈련 중인 울버햄프턴은 마르베야 훈련장에서 코모와 연습경기를 치렀다.

황희찬은 후반 시작과 함께 그라운드에 투입됐는데 후반 23분 상대 팀 선수로부터 인종차별적인 발언을 들었고,u21 프리미어리그이에 격분한 팀 동료 포덴세가 인종차별 발언을 한 선수를 향해 주먹을 날린 뒤 퇴장당했다.

게리 오닐 울버햄프턴 감독은 황희찬에게 계속 경기를 뛰어도 괜찮겠냐고 물었고,u21 프리미어리그마리오 르미나로부터 주장 완장을 이어받은 황희찬은 경기를 끝까지 소화했다.

경기가 끝난 뒤 오닐 감독은 "황희찬이 인종차별 발언을 들었다"라며 "황희찬에게 경기를 계속 뛸 수 있겠냐고 물었더니 끝까지 뛰겠다고 했다.이런 상황이 벌어진 게 너무 실망스럽다.절대 일어나서는 안 되는 일이다"라고 강조했다.

그는 "황희찬이 모욕적인 일을 겪었음에도 팀을 최우선으로 생각하는 게 자랑스러웠다"며 "황희찬은 팀원들의 전폭적인 지지를 받고 있다"고 말했다.

울버햄프턴 구단도 "인종차별 행위는 어떤 형태로든 받아들여질 수 없다"며 "이번 사안에 대해 유럽축구연맹(UEFA)에 제소하기로 했다"고 밝혔다.
