일론 머스크가 이끄는 우주기업 스페이스X의 팰컨9 로켓이 이례적으로 발사에 실패했습니다.

현지시간 12일 블룸버그 통신 등에 따르면 팰컨9은 지난 11일 오후 7시 30분 미국 캘리포니아주 샌타바버라의 밴덴버그 우주군 기지에서 스타링크 네트워크용 위성 20기를 싣고 발사됐습니다.

팰컨9는 스페이스X가 개발한 재사용 가능한 우주발사체로,한양대역 로또지구 저궤도 통신망 사업인 스타링크를 위해 위성들을 궤도에 올려놓는 역할을 해왔습니다.

이미 지구 궤도에는 팰컨9 등에 실려 발사된 위성 6천 기가 배치돼 있습니다.

이날 발사된 팰컨9 로켓은 9개의 엔진을 장착한 1단 부스터를 이용해 날아올랐고 이 부스터는 분리된 뒤 스페이스X가 재활용할 수 있도록 바다에 있는 회수 플랫폼에 안전하게 착륙했습니다.

그러나 위성을 최종 궤도까지 올려놓도록 설계된 2단 로켓 엔진에 갑자기 이상이 생기면서 계획했던 궤도 진입에 실패했습니다.

스페이스X는 성명을 내고 "스타링크의 팰컨9 발사 중 2단 엔진이 2차 연소를 완료하지 못했다"며 "그 결과 위성들이 의도한 것보다 낮은 궤도에 배치됐다"고 밝혔습니다.

구체적인 원인은 확인되지 않고 있습니다.

머스크 테슬라 CEO는 자신의 엑스 계정에 "2단 엔진이 실패했을 뿐만 아니라 '의도되지 않은 갑작스러운 분해'(RUD·rapid unscheduled disassembly)를 경험했다"고 밝혔습니다.

'RUD'는 스페이스X가 사용하는 용어로 폭발을 의미합니다.

블룸버그 통신에 따르면 팰컨9은 2015년 나사 화물을 국제우주정거장(ISS)으로 실어 나르던 중 폭발했고,한양대역 로또이듬해에는 발사대에서 연료를 주입하는 실험 중 폭발하기도 했습니다.

그러나 이후에는 일부 착륙 과정에서 문제가 발생한 것을 제외하면 거의 완벽한 발사 기록을 유지해 왔다고 통신은 전했습니다.

스페이스X는 지난해 팰컨9과 또 다른 발사체인 팰컨 헤비를 96번 성공적으로 발사했으며,한양대역 로또올해는 최대 148번의 발사를 목표로 하고 있습니다.

이번 발사는 올해 스페이스X의 팰컨 로켓 제품군 중 70번째 발사였습니다.
