[앵커]

유럽이 개발한 차세대 우주 발사체 '아리안 6호'가 4년 지연 끝에 첫 발사에 성공했습니다.

항공우주 기술력 향상을 둘러싼 미·중 간 각축전 속에 유럽 역시 신형 로켓 시장에 뛰어들면서 경쟁이 더 가열될 것으로 보입니다.

굉음과 함께 강한 화염을 내뿜는 로켓이 하늘로 치솟습니다.

유럽우주국이 개발한 차세대 우주 발사체 아리안 6호입니다.

발사 1시간 6분 만에 한국을 비롯한 세계 각국의 대학이 개발한 11개 위성들이 성공적으로 분리돼 지구 저궤도에 안착 되자 연구원들은 환호했습니다.

발사 장면은 유럽 각지에 생중계됐습니다.

[캐서린/프랑스 시민 : "수십 년 동안 이 우주 도시(툴루즈)를 알고 있었지만,이런 광경은 처음입니다."]

유럽우주국은 스페이스X 등 저비용을 내세운 민간 우주개발업체와의 경쟁이 거세지자 민간업체인 아리안 그룹과 손잡고 차세대 우주 발사체 개발을 추진해 왔습니다.

아리안 6호는 당초 2020년 발사 예정이었지만,코로나19와 기술적 문제 등으로 4년이 지나서야 발사됐습니다.

이번 발사 성공으로 유럽은 지난해 7월 퇴역한 아리안 5호 이후의 로켓 공백 상태도 해소하게 됐습니다.

[뤼디거 알바트/전직 아리안 프로젝트 관리자 : "유럽이 독자적으로 우주에 접근하고 자체 자원을 사용하여 모든 새로운 응용 프로그램을 개발할 수 있다는 것은 우리에게 매우 중요한 일입니다."]

다만 로켓 1단 추진체를 20번 넘게 재사용할 수 있는 스페이스엑스의 팰컨9에 비하면 경쟁력에서 밀린다는 평가가 나옵니다.

이 같은 비판을 의식해 유럽우주국도 1단 추진체 재사용 기술이 탑재된 아리안 넥스트 후속 로켓 개발에 착수했습니다.
