효성중공업이 국내 최초로 200메가와트(㎿)급 전압형 초고압직류송전(HVDC) 기술 개발에 성공했다.

효성중공업은 한국전력공사와 함께 9일 경기 양주변전소에서 200㎿ 규모의 전압형 HVDC 변환설비 구축을 기념하는 준공식을 개최했다고 밝혔다.

HVDC는 초고압교류송전(HVAC)보다 전력 손실을 최소화해 더 먼 거리까지 송전할 수 있게 해주는 기술이다.실시간 양방향 전력 제어가 자유롭고 계통 안정화에도 유리해 재생에너지 연계가 가능하다.이 때문에 태양광이나 풍력발전 등 산지 및 해안가에서 생성한 신재생에너지를 도심까지 효율적으로 이동시키는 데 필요한 핵심 기술로 꼽힌다.

국산화 제품으로는 국내에 처음 설치된 한전 양주변전소 200㎿급 전압형 HVDC 변환설비는 경기 북부 지역 계통 안정화를 위해 사용된다.200㎿는 일반 가정집 48만가구가 한 달간 사용할 수 있는 전력 규모다.

효성중공업은 2017년부터 국책과제로 200㎿ 전압형 HVDC 개발을 시작했으며 현재까지 약 1000억원을 투자해 국산화에 성공했다.앞서 효성은 2018년에 20㎿ 전압형 HVDC 개발에 성공한 바 있다.

이번 HVDC 개발은 그동안 글로벌 기업들이 과점하고 있던 국내 HVDC 시장과 글로벌 HVDC 시장 진출의 기술적 발판을 마련했다는 점에서 의미가 크다.효성중공업은 200㎿ 전압형 HVDC 개발에 이어 기가와트(GW)급 대용량 전압형 HVDC를 개발할 예정이다.
