팻 라이더 미 국방부 대변인은 25일(현지시각) 로이드 오스틴 국방장관이 안드레이 벨로우소프 러시아 국방장관과 전화 통화를 가졌다고 밝혔다.

오스틴 장관은 우크라이나 전쟁이 계속되는 가운데 소통 라인을 유지하는 게 중요하다고 강조했다.

리아노보스티에 따르면 러시아 국방부는 통화 소식을 전하며 "벨로우소프 장관은 우크라이나 군대로 향하는 미국의 지속적인 무기 지원과 관련해 상황이 더욱 확대할 위험이 있다고 지적했다"고 발표했다.

아울러 "미국 측 접촉으로 벨로우소프 장관이 오스틴 장관과 통화했다"면서 "기타 현안도 논의됐다"고 덧붙였다.

이번 통화는 벨로우소프 장관이 지난달 개각으로 취임한 이후 양측이 가진 첫 전화다.

미국과 러시아 국방장관이 통화를 가진 건 지난해 3월 세르게이 쇼이구 당시 국방장관과 전화 뒤로 1년 3개월 만이기도 하다.

러시아 고위 군사·국방 관리와 소통 부족으로 미국 국방부에서는 오판 위험성을 두고 우려가 커지고 있다고 뉴욕타임스(NYT)는 전했다．
