김제영 LG에너지솔루션 최고기술책임자(CTO) 전무는 4일 블룸버그와 인터뷰에서 4분기에 건식 코팅 공정을 위한 시험용 생산라인을 완공하고 2028년 전면 생산을 시작할 계획이라고 말했다.LG에너지솔루션이 건식 코팅 공정 상업화 시기를 공개한 것은 이번이 처음이다.

김 CTO는 건식 코팅 공정을 통해 배터리 제조 비용을 17~30%가량 줄일 수 있다고 추정했다.그는 "(건식 코팅 분야) 경쟁업체 가운데 LG에너지솔루션이 최고"라면서 "우리는 10년 전 시작했다"고 말했다.

이 기술은 배터리의 핵심 요소인 양극·음극 제조와 관련돼 있다.에너지 소비가 많고 환경 오염이 심한 기존 습식 공정을 대체하기 위한 것으로,고마워토토 판교테슬라와 삼성SDI 등도 공을 들이고 있다.

전기차 부문 선도업체인 테슬라는 2019년 해당 기술을 보유한 스타트업을 인수하고 사이버트럭에 탑재되는 '4680' 배터리 생산에 적용을 시도하고 있지만 아직 제한적으로만 성공했다.

폭스바겐은 자회사 파워코에서 건식 코팅 방식을 개발하고 있다.습식 공정에 비해 에너지와 공간 사용을 각각 30%와 50% 줄일 수 있는 만큼 해당 기술을 '게임 체인저'로 평가하기도 했다.
