[앵커]

포항 앞바다에 대량의 석유·가스가 매장됐을 가능성이 있다고 분석한 미국 지질탐사회사 고문이 오늘 오전 방한했습니다.

석유공사의 요청에 의해 입국한 것인데 후속 조치 등 자문을 맡을 것으로 알려졌습니다.

김진희 기자가 보도합니다.

포항 앞바다에 해저 석유와 가스가 매장되어 있을 가능성을 제기한 미국 전문가가 오늘 오전 방한했습니다.

이번 정부 발표의 근거가 된 심층 분석 결과를 내놓은 미국 심해탐사전문기업 액트지오 고문 비토르 아브레우 박사입니다.

[비토르 아브레우/액트지오 고문 : "한국석유공사와 함께 이 프로젝트에 어떻게 접근하는게 가장 좋을지 논의하고,베트남 에슬롯미(의문들이 많은만큼) 더 명확한 답변을 하려고 왔습니다."]

'심해 가스전의 경제성이 높은 것으로 보냐'는 질문에는 "그렇다"고 답하면서도 "비밀 유지협약 때문에 자세히 말할 순 없다"고 했습니다.

이번 입국은 석유공사의 요청에 따라 이뤄진 것으로 시험 시추 등 후속 조치에 대한 자문을 할 것으로 전해졌습니다.

방한 기간,베트남 에슬롯미별도의 기자회견도 가질 예정입니다.

앞서 아브레우 박사는 액트지오에 대해 기업 규모는 작지만 심해탐사에 특화된 회사로 세계적인 전문가들과 협력하고 있다고 설명한 것으로 전해졌습니다.

정부는 지난해 2월,축적된 동해안 심해 탐사 데이터를 엑트지오 측에 보내 정밀분석을 의뢰했으며,액트지오는 최대 140억 배럴의 석유·가스가 묻혀있을 가능성이 있다고 지난해 말,베트남 에슬롯미석유공사에 통보했습니다.

이같은 평가 결과에 대해 국내외 전문가들이 다시 한번 검증을 거쳤다는 게 정부의 설명입니다.

한편 석유공사는 지난달 노르웨이 해양 시추업체 시드릴 측과 시추선 사용 계약을 맺었습니다.

첫 시추작업은 오는 12월 시작해 40일 정도 진행될 것으로 보이며,베트남 에슬롯미성공 확률은 20%로 예측되고 있습니다.
