올해 11월 미국 대선에 무소속 출마를 선언한 로버트 F.케네디 주니어 후보의 완주 계획에 예상치 못했던 차질이 빚어지게 됐습니다.

12일(현지시간) 뉴욕타임스(NYT)에 따르면 뉴욕주 법원은 이날 케네디 주니어 후보가 대선 후보 등록을 위해 제출한 주소가 허위라는 이유로 후보 등록이 무효라고 결정했습니다.

크리스티나 리바 판사는 "케네디 주니어가 자신의 정치적 목적을 이루기 위해 뉴욕주에 가짜 주소를 만들어 사용했다"고 밝혔습니다.

케네디 주니어는 1960년대부터 뉴욕에서 생활했지만,2014년 로스앤젤레스로 거주지를 옮겼습니다.

다만 최근 각 주의 투표용지에 자신의 이름을 올리기 위해 후보 등록을 하는 과정에서는 뉴욕주 외곽의 주소를 사용했습니다.

로스앤젤레스에 살고 있지만 여전히 뉴욕의 한 주택에 생활 근거가 있다는 이유에서였습니다.

이 같은 케네디 주니어의 후보 등록에 대해 뉴욕의 민주당 관계자들은 "서류에 기재된 뉴욕주 주택에 다른 사람이 살고 있다"며 이의를 제기했습니다.

케네디 주니어는 주택 중 침실 하나를 임대해 사용하고 있다고 항변했지만,신안 갯벌센터 슬로시티센터법원은 이 같은 주장을 받아들이지 않았습니다.

케네디 주니어가 캘리포니아 로스앤젤레스의 거주지를 놔두고 뉴욕의 가짜 주소를 사용한 것은 러닝메이트 니콜 섀너핸 때문으로 보입니다.

미국 헌법은 대통령과 부통령 후보가 같은 주 출신일 경우 해당 주에서 승리해도 선거인단을 확보하지 못하게 하고 있습니다.

러닝메이트인 섀너핸도 같은 캘리포니아에 거주하기 때문에 케네디 주니어가 뉴욕의 주소를 적어낸 것으로 보인다는 것이 NYT의 분석입니다.

이날 판결이 다른 주의 후보 등록에 영향을 미칠 가능성도 있습니다.

케네디 주니어는 현재 경합 주인 미시간과 노스캐롤라이나를 포함해 19개 주 투표용지에 이름을 올렸지만,20개 이상의 주에서 허위 주소와 관련한 문제가 제기된 상태입니다.

케네디 주니어 측은 이날 법원의 결정에 상소하겠다고 밝혔습니다.
