WSJ는 13일(현지시간) 화웨이의 AI용 최신 프로세서인 '어센드 910C'가 최근 몇 주 동안 중국 인터넷 및 통신 회사에서 테스트를 거치고 있다고 보도했다.

화웨이는 잠재 고객들에게 이 칩이 엔비디아의 H100과 비견될 만하다고 홍보하고 있는 것으로 알려졌다.엔비디아의 AI용 GPU(그래픽처리장치)인 H100은 현존하는 최고 성능의 AI 칩으로 평가받고 있다.

미국 당국은 중국의 AI 산업을 견제하기 위해 지난해 국가 안보를 이유로 들며 엔비디아가 H100을 포함한 첨단 칩을 중국 고객에게 판매하는 것을 중단시키는 제재를 시행했다.

이에따라 엔비디아는 H100에 비해 성능이 떨어지는 H20를 비롯한 3종의 저사양 칩을 중국 수출용으로 새로 출시한 바 있다.

이같은 조치는 중국 AI 산업의 발전에 장애요인으로 작용하고 있지만 그 반대 급부로 화웨이를 비롯한 중국 정보통신 업체들의 기술 자립을 더욱 가속화한 것으로 보인다.
