올해 미국에서 열린‘핫도그 많이 먹기’국제 대회에서 16회 우승을 거머쥔 남자 챔피언 대신 새로운 챔피언이 탄생했다.

미 독립기념일인 4일 뉴욕에서 열린 네이선스 국제 핫도그 먹기대회에서 시카고에 거주하는 패트릭 버톨레티(26)가 남자 부문 우승을 차지했다.버톨레티가 이번 대회에서 주어진 10분간 먹은 핫도그 개수는 58개였다.

핫도그로 유명한 미국의 레스토랑 체인‘네이선스 페이머스’주최로 열리는 이 대회는 1972년부터 매년 독립기념일마다 뉴욕의 유원지 코니아일랜드에서 열려왔다.이번 대회는 유명 푸드파이터 조이 체스트넛(40)이 주최 측과 불화로 참석하지 못하면서 더 큰 관심을 모았다.상어가 주인공인 영화명을 따‘조스’라는 별명을 갖고 있는 체스트넛은 2007년 첫 우승을 거머쥔 뒤 작년까지 이 대회에서 총 16회나 챔피언에 오른 인물이다.이 기간 1위 자리를 내준 것은 2015년이 유일하다.

대회의 상징과도 같았던 체스트넛은 지난달 비건(채식) 핫도그를 만드는‘임파서블 푸드’와 파트너십 계약을 체결한 후 네이선스와 갈등을 겪었고,2018년 4월 24일 야구 경기일정주최 측은 대회 규정을 들어 그의 출전을 금지했다.체스트넛은 이날 대회 출전 대신 텍사스주 군 기지에서 열리는 자선행사에 참석해 핫도그 먹기 장면을 생중계하겠다고 밝혔다.

한편 여성부 대회에서는 핫도그 51개를 먹은 미키 수도가 여자 신기록을 경신하며 올해 우승을 차지했다.
