13세 영국 뇌전증 환자의 뇌에 세계 최초로 신경자극장치가 설치돼 발작 감소 등의 효과를 내고 있다고 영국 BBC 방송이 23일(현지시간) 보도했습니다.

이에 따르면 지난해 10월 런던 그레이트 오몬드 스트리트 병원에서 세계에서 처음으로 신경자극장치를 뇌전증 환자의 뇌에 심는 수술이 성공적으로 이뤄졌습니다.

수술받은 환자는 당시 12살이던 오란 놀슨으로 그는 약물로 조절하기 매우 힘든 유형의 뇌전증인 레녹스-가스토 증후군을 앓고 있었습니다.

수술팀은 무려 8시간에 걸친 수술에서 오란의 뇌에 두 개의 전극을 신경 정보의 핵심 중계소인 시상에 도달할 때까지 삽입한 뒤 가로세로 3.5㎝에 두께 0.6㎝ 크기의 신경자극장치와 연결했습니다.

이 신경자극장치는 뼈가 제거된 오란의 두개골 틈새에 고정됐습니다.

뇌심부 자극술은 이전에도 소아 뇌전증을 대상으로 시도된 적이 있지만,뱀 짤가슴이 아닌 뇌에 신경자극장치를 설치한 것은 이번이 처음입니다.

당시 수술은 심각한 뇌전증에 대한 뇌심부 자극의 안전성과 효과를 평가하기 위한 실험인 CADET 프로젝트의 일환으로 이뤄졌습니다.

이 프로젝트에는 그레이트 오몬드 스트리트 병원과 유니버시티 칼리지 런던(UCL),뱀 짤킹스 칼리지 병원,뱀 짤옥스퍼드 대학교 등이 참여하고 있습니다.

오란은 하루에도 수십 번에서 수백 번에 이르는 발작으로 고통받고 있었으나 수술 이후 낮 시간 발작이 80%나 감소했을 정도로 발작빈도가 크게 줄어들었습니다.

오란의 어머니인 저스틴은 아들이 자폐증과 주의력결핍 및 과잉행동장애(ADHD)도 갖고 있지만 뇌전증이 가장 큰 문제였다면서 아들이 수술 이후 행복해하고 있으며 그의 삶의 질도 매우 좋아졌다고 전했습니다.

수술을 집도한 마틴 티스달 박사도 수술을 통해 오란의 발작을 줄이고 삶의 질이 크게 향상됐다는 점에서 기쁘게 생각한다고 밝혔습니다.

그러면서 이번 연구를 통해 뇌심부 자극술이 심각한 뇌전증에 효과적인 치료법이 될 수 있을지 확인할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다고 티스달 박사는 말했습니다.
