(워싱턴=연합뉴스) 김경희 특파원 = 유세 도중 총격에 노출된 도널드 트럼프 전 미국 대통령 경호를 전담하는 미 비밀경호국(SS)이 15일(이하 현지시간) 관련 조사에 적극적으로 참여하겠다는 입장을 밝혔다.

킴벌리 치틀 SS 국장은 총격 사건 이후 첫 성명을 통해 조 바이든 대통령이 전날 지시한 트럼프 전 대통령 피격과 관련한 독립적 조사에 적극적으로 참여하고 의회의 어떤 조사 행위에도 협조하겠다고 확인했다.

치틀 국장은 또 "공화당 전당대회 경호 계획에 자신한다"면서 "토요일 피격 사건 이후 우리는 계획을 검토하고 강화했다"고 강조했다.

그는 피격 사건 이후 트럼프 전 대통령에 대한 세부 경호를 한층 강화했다고도 설명했다.

트럼프 전 대통령은 이날부터 시작되는 공화당 전당대회를 이틀 앞둔 지난 13일 펜실베이니아 버틀러 유세 도중 20세 백인 청년 토머스 매슈 크룩스가 쏜 총에 맞아 귀에 부상을 입었다.

대선을 넉달도 채 남겨놓지 않고 발생한 사건으로 정국은 대혼란에 빠져들었고 크룩스가 행사장 인근 빌딩 옥상에서 총을 발사하기까지 과정을 놓고 경호에 허점이 있었던 것 아니냐는 비판이 제기되는 상황이다.

바이든 대통령은 잇단 기자회견을 통해 단합을 강조하며 경호 과정에 대한 독립적 조사를 진행하겠다는 입장을 내놓았다.

공화당이 주도하는 하원을 비롯해 상원에서도 피격 사건을 비롯해 트럼프 전 대통령 경호 허점과 관련해 별도 조사를 진행한다는 방침이다.
