애플이 그동안 승인을 끌어오던 에픽게임즈의 '게임 스토어'를 승인했다.유럽연합(EU) 내에 앱스토어 외부에서 설치 및 결제가 가능한 자체 스토어가 곧 등장할 것으로 보인다.

6일(현지시간) 로이터통신 등 외신에 따르면 애플은 지난 5일 늦게 에픽게임즈의 '게임 마켓 플레이스 앱'을 승인했다.에픽게임즈가 이날 애플에 공식적으로 항의하자 승인된 것으로 추정된다.에픽게임즈는 이날 엑스(X) 계정을 통해 애플이 자사 게임 스토어 승인 요청을 두 차례나 기각했다면서 애플이 에픽 게임 스토어의 '인앱 구매' 라벨과 '설치' 버튼이 애플의 디자인과 너무 유사하다고 설명했다고 불만을 표시했다.에픽게임즈는 "애플의 거부는 자의적이고,슬롯 검증사이트 au방해를 위한 목적으로 디지털시장법(DMA)을 위반하는 것"이라고 밝혔다.

팀 스위니 에픽게임즈 최고경영자(CEO)는 에픽 스토어 승인 이후인 6일 자신의 X 계정에 애플이 다음 버전에서 버튼을 변경할 것을 요구하고 있다면서 이에 맞서 싸울 것이라고 밝혔다.EU는 올해 3월 빅테크 기업들을 강력하게 규제하는 DMA를 도입했다.이에 따라 애플과 구글은 자사 앱스토어에 외부 결제와 독립 앱스토어 사용을 허용했다.에픽게임즈는 iOS 내에서 독립적인 앱스토어를 구축하려는 대표적인 기업이다.이 회사는 애플과 2020년부터 앱스토어 건으로 소송을 진행하고 있다.

EU는 애플의 앱스토어 운영 방식이 DMA 위반에 해당한다고 잠정 결론을 내리고 이를 애플에 통보했다.이뿐만 아니라 메타의 '유료 또는 동의' 모델을 DMA 위반으로 판단하고 제재에 착수할 것으로 예상된다.DMA를 위반하면 전 세계 매출의 최대 10%에 해당하는 과징금이 부과될 수 있으며 반복적 위반이라고 판단되면 과징금이 최대 20%까지 상향될 수 있다.
