애플은 14일(현지시각) 홈페이지를 통해 아이폰 운영체제(OS) iOS 18.1 버전부터 외부 간편 결제 서비스를 아이폰의 근거리무선통신(NFC) 칩을 활용할 수 있다고 공지했다.이번 변화를 통해 폐쇄적이었던 기존의 페이 시스템을 외부에 개방한 셈이다.하지만 한국은 대상국에서 제외됐다.

IOS 18은 다음달 출시 예정인 아이폰16 시리즈에 기본 탑재된다.업계에서는 후속 버전인 IOS 18.1의 경우 4분기 내 공개될 것으로 보고 있다.IOS 18.1이 정식 공개되면 아이폰에서 애플페이 외 다른 간편 결제 서비스 사용이 가능하다.▲대중교통 요금 지불▲직장 출입증▲집과 자동차 키 등 NFC를 활용한 기능들을 이용할 수 있다.기술적으로는 아이폰에서 삼성페이를 사용할 수 있다.

애플은 NFC 칩을 활용하는 외부 개발자들에게 수수료를 부과하고 계약을 체결할 방침이다.아울러 특정 요구 사항을 충족하고 지속적인 보안 방침을 준수하는 개발자만 해당 서비스에 접근할 수 있다는 설명이다.

애플은 우선 ▲미국▲호주▲브라질▲캐나다▲일본▲뉴질랜드▲영국에 거주하는 개발자들에게 해당 서비스 접근 권한을 제공한다고 밝혔다.아이폰 1차 출시국에서 매번 제외되는 한국은 이번에도 1차 대상국에 포함되지 않았다.

그간 애플은 보안을 이유로 애플페이 외 타사 서비스를 차단했다.그러나 최근 미국과 유럽연합(EU)을 위시한 규제당국이 애플의 독점적 지위를 지적하며 압박해 결국 백기를 들었다.
