장 회장은 1930년 황해도 남촌에서 7남매 중 셋째로 태어나 18살때 월남한 뒤,복권 편의점어려운 형편 속에서도 고학으로 대학원까지 졸업했다.이후 무역업에 뛰어들어 화장품 용기 제조회사 삼성브러쉬를 설립,복권 편의점중국까지 사업을 확장했다.

2021년 부인 안하옥(당시 90세) 여사와 함께 서울 강남구 논현동 소재 200억원 상당의 부동산을 과학기술 인재 양성에 써달라며 학교에 기부했다.

당시 안 여사는 "우리 부부의 오랜 꿈을 실현할 수 있어서 기쁘다"며 "우리의 기부가 우리나라 과학기술 발전에 보탬이 된다면 더 바랄 것이 없다"고 소감을 밝히기도 했다.

카이스트는 장 회장의 기부금으로 미래 의과학 분야를 선도할 '(가칭)장성환·안하옥 바이오신약센터'를 건립하고 있다.2026년 8월 완공을 목표로 추진 중이다.

장 회장은 과학기술 발전에 기여한 공로로 2022년 KAIST 명예경영학 박사 학위를 받았다.유족으로 부인과 1남 1녀가 있다.

빈소는 연세대학교 용인장례식장(특실)에 마련됐다.발인은 3일 오전 8시이며,복권 편의점장지는 경춘공원묘원(강원도 춘천시 서면)이다.
