한국광해광업공단은 지난 17일 '2024년도 폐광심의위원회'를 열어 대한석탄공사 장성광업소를 폐광지원 대상 광산으로 선정했다고 18일 밝혔다.

이에 따라 장성광업소는 7월 1일 산업자원부에 광업권 소멸 등록 등 마지막 폐광 절차를 밟는다.

장성광업소는 일제 강점기인 1936년부터 운영된 국내 최대 탄광이다.

개광 이래 87년간 석탄 9천400만t을 생산해 국민 연료인 연탄의 수급 안정과 지역 경제에 크게 이바지했다.

현재 415명이 근무하고 있다.

강원도는 장성광업소 폐광에 따른 대량 실업과 급격한 경기 침체에 대응하고자 재취업 및 기업 지원 등 다각적인 고용안정 정책을 모색 중이다.

광해광업공단은 폐광지역과 협의해 바이오·식품 클러스터 조성사업(전남 화순군),카지노 시즌1 1화다시보기청정 메탄올 제조 중심의 미래 자원 클러스터(태백시),카지노 시즌1 1화다시보기첨단 가속기 기반 의료산업 클러스터(삼척시) 등의 사업계획을 수립해 예비타당성 조사를 진행하고 있다.

대한석탄공사의 단계적 폐광은 2023년도 노사정 간담회와 노사 합의를 통해 확정됐다.

지난해 화순광업소,올해 장성광업소에 이어 2025년도에 도계광업소가 문을 닫는다.

황규연 한국광해광업공단 사장은 "퇴직 근로자의 생활 안정을 위해 폐광대책비와 조기폐광특별위로금을 신속 지급하겠다"며 "폐광 충격이 최소화되도록 경제진흥사업과 환경복구를 위한 광해 방지사업도 차질 없이 추진하겠다"고 말했다.
