송두환 국가인권위원회 위원장은 제1회 북한이탈주민의날(14일)을 맞아 북한 사회에 대한 편견을 덜고 관용적인 태도를 보여줘야 한다고 촉구했습니다.

송 위원장은 이날 성명을 내고 "북한이탈주민의 날을 맞이하여 우리 사회가 차별과 편견이 아닌 포용과 배려로 한층 더 성숙한 사회로 나아가길 바란다"고 밝혔습니다.

송 위원장은 "우리와 말투가 다르다거나,부평마사지우리 사회에 대한 이해가 아직 부족하다는 이유로 북한이탈주민을 다르게 대한다면 우리 사회가 지향하는 '관용사회'는 이뤄질 수 없다"고 말했습니다.

그는 "우리 사회가 북한이탈주민을 우리 사회의 평범한 구성원으로,부평마사지함께 살아가는 이웃으로 인식하는 것이 필요하다"며 "사회의 한 구성원으로서 인식되는 것이 각각의 구성원들이 일상적인 삶을 온전히 누릴 수 있게 하는 출발점"이라고 강조했습니다.

이어 "북한이탈주민이 우리 사회의 평범한 구성원으로서 안정적으로 정착해 각자의 삶을 누릴 수 있도록 관련 제도·정책 개선 모색에 노력하겠다"고 덧붙였습니다.

북한이탈주민의 날은 북한이탈주민의 보호 및 정착지원에 관한 법률이 시행된 날(1997년 7월 14일)을 기념해 올해 5월 국가 기념일로 공식 지정됐습니다.
