사우디 당국은 지난 19일에만 2천700명이 넘는 온열질환 사례가 보고됐다고 밝혔으나 사망자 통계는 공개하지 않고 있습니다.

온열질환을 앓는 환자가 3천명에 육박하는 데다 실종자도 다수여서 사망자는 더 늘어날 가능성이 있습니다.

사망자의 국적은 이집트를 비롯해 말레이시아,파키스탄,인도,무료 전기 야간 슬롯요르단,이란,세네갈,튀니지,이라크 등이었습니다.

사우디는 지난 17일 메카 대사원 마스지드 알하람의 기온이 섭씨 51.8도를 기록할 정도로 무더운 날씨가 이어지고 있습니다.

이런 상황 속에서 폭염 속 인파에 대비한 준비가 미진했다는 순례객들의 증언도 이어지고 있습니다.

미국 CNN 방송은 성지순례를 다녀온 이들의 증언을 토대로 현지에서 순례객들을 보호할 의료진이나 기본 시설,물 등이 충분히 제공되지 않았다고 보도했습니다.

또,순례객들이 이용한 여행사가 성지순례에 필요한 적절한 교통수단이나 증명서를 제공하지 않았고,여행에 필요한 식량과 물품도 부족했다는 주장도 제기되면서 대규모 인명피해에 대한 책임론도 불거질 전망입니다.
